Jasmine Nakano

Jasmine Nanako, a 15-year-old ninth grader at Stanford Online High School, was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and Bangladeshi-American father. In early 2021, she and her sister were abducted from Japan to Bangladesh by their father, who also severely alienated them from their mother. Despite a Tokyo Family Court order granting their mother sole custody, she was unable to leave Bangladesh for over three years after entering the country to recover her daughters. Amid ongoing legal battles, the Bangladeshi courts initially ignored the Japanese order, granting custody to the father. Jasmine’s mother fought the decision, even after losing her job, and was ultimately awarded full custody in January 2023. Jasmine, now free from alienation, managed to leave Bangladesh in April 2024 with the help of the Japanese Embassy. Her sister remains missing, and their mother continues to fight for her return.
